In a world of heavy advertising, heavy phone use and a heavy reliance on technology, the Light Phone is changing our relationship with our phones.
It happens to all of us. When we leave the house and we can’t feel our phone in our pocket or see it in our bag, we panic; we’ve lost a part of us, our connection to the digital world and our digital selves.
When ‘Light’ showcased on Kickstarter in May 2015, they were making waves in the technology world. When they raised enough money from their backers, they shipped out to the masses in January 2017.
The creators say ‘Light’ was born as an alternative to the tech monopolies, such as Apple and Samsung. It’s minimal design, both in its aesthetics and features, are key to curing our addiction to apps. The ‘Light’ phone is capable of only making and receiving phone calls, one could describe it as “quite a smart ‘dumb’ phone.” The creators wanted to get people to leave their phones at home and go enjoy life. However, this could prove difficult as many of us don’t want to venture outside without our phones, they act like a security blanket.
Due to the success of the first ‘Light Phone’, there is a second ‘Light Phone’ in the making. This time, the phone has the capability of calling, messaging, and getting directions but still avoids the time-wasting aspect and distraction of games and social media apps.
The company says it sold more than 10,000 ‘Light Phones’ in more than 50 countries. Does this mean more people want a break from technology without completely abandoning it?
If you want a break from technology, why not go back to phones that were produced pre-apps or before 4G was ever uttered? Now that we’ve gotten used to the slimline, featureless smartphone, does using actual buttons for texting scare us?
Do we want to go back or go forward whilst keeping elements of the past; a so called de-convergence of technology and media on our phones?
Do you agree that we should be focusing on this type of technology? That we should be activity minimising our screen time on our smartphones?
