We now live in an era where technology is advancing at a rapid pace, this has led to technology being able to do incredible things such as a creating images from text we write, face recognition and we are now even seeing the beginning of robots. Because our gadgets can now do incredible things we have also seen a price increase on phones, laptops and even game consoles. Every time we now purchase one of these items it can now be said it is something of an investment rather than just a random item we splurged on.
We should therefore be thinking about how we can take better care of our laptops and learn if there is anything we can do to prolong their life. Take a look at the below tips to make sure you are taking the correct steps to protecting your expensive laptop.
1. Anti-virus software
If you watched any news in 2017 you would have seen some sort of news surrounding hacking scandals or ransomware, it seemed to be reported on almost daily. Hackers are now targeting laptops more than ever and even if you are careful with what you download, it could still have a virus attached to it. It is therefore vital that when you purchase a new laptop you also purchase anti-virus software along with it. This will also help to stop your machine from slowing down and overall give it a better performance.
2. Don’t pull on the power cord
Do you always find your Laptop charger breaks? “Tugging your power cord out from the power socket rather than pulling directly on the plug can cause the cord to break off from the plug or damage the power socket”. Always make sure you remove the plug correctly and hopefully you will never have to invest in a new charger again.
3. Don’t expose your laptop to rapid temperature changes
Try to avoid leaving your laptop in the car overnight or in in direct sunlight. This can lead to the laptop over heating or condensation be produced if left in very cold temperatures. Here is a top tip, “when bringing your laptop indoors during winter, don’t turn it on immediately. Instead, let it warm to room temperature first. This will avoid any potential for damage to the disk drive from condensation forming inside the machine”.
4. Clean your unit
This may sound like a very simply tip but cleaning your laptop regularly will definitely help your laptop to last longer. If you let dust continue to build up on your machine it will eventually not be able to cool itself and this can destroy the motherboard. Make sure you clean it regularly yourself or take it to a computer specialist if it has been left for a long period of time.
5. Always update your laptop!
All of us at one point have pressed the ‘remind me later’ button when we see an update pop up on our screen. We always feel we are too busy to waste time waiting for the machine to restart and we have vital work we need to be getting on with. But if you continuously refuse to not let the machine update it will miss out on important security updates which will leave your computer vulnerable to hackers. It will also slow down the machines performance.
