In recent years we have seen the race take place between the major phone giants to create a new type of smartphone. Over the last few years we saw Samsung release the S8 which included an infinity edge screen with folded edges, it feels as though we have been on the verge of creating a foldable smartphone ever since. One company has now claimed they have done exactly this.
Royole Corporation may have won the battle and they plan to release the FlexPai. The FlexPai is a smartphone the size of a tablet but unlike other large phones this one can be bent in half to become the size of a small book. This is extremely exciting in the technology world however no official release has been given.
It seems as though a technology breakthrough has finally been made in the smartphone world however the video released by Royole Corporation has come under fire. Many people have criticised the video and found there are many flaws in the design. One major fault is that the phone does not appear to fold fully. The phone does not sit flat and therefore would make it difficult to fit into a pocket. The software also does not seem to function well in the folded state and takes a while to understand the orientation.
Royal Corporation have stated this is a very early release of the design and that it is an ongoing project. The FlexPai will feature a Snapdragon 8-series chipset which has suggested to many that the phone will cost around $1,290 if the phone also included 6GB of RAM. People in America will now be able to pre order this phone and shipping is expected to take place this December.
Although Royal Corporation may have ‘won the race’ it is set to have some serious rivalry. It is rumoured Samsung will be releasing their own version of a foldable smartphone very soon and both LG and Huawei report to have foldable phones in development.
Everyone seems to be very eager to see these new releases but do you think we will see these designs in person anytime soon? There is a major jump from design and testing to the reality of a real release.
What do you think about the FlexPai? Do you like the design? Would you invest in one? Leave me a comment with your thoughts.
