If the power fails, the people in your building still need to see their way out. Emergency lighting lights your escape routes, stairs and exits when the normal lights go off.

Applewood Fire & Security provides emergency lighting designed and installed to BS 5266-1 for businesses and shared buildings across Crawley and the rest of Sussex. We’ll tell you in plain English what your building needs and why.

Call 020 3696 9489 (Mon to Fri, 08:30 to 17:00) or send us a message for a no-obligation chat about emergency lighting.

Who we help in Crawley

  • Businesses on Manor Royal and around Gatwick: warehouses, factories, offices and trade counters.
  • Shops, cafés and offices in the town centre and on neighbourhood parades.
  • Landlords and managing agents responsible for the common parts of flats and shared houses.
  • Schools, nurseries, churches and community halls.
  • Facilities managers looking after more than one building.

Warehouses and industrial units on Manor Royal

In a large warehouse with few windows, a power cut can leave aisles in darkness. Manor Royal, next to Gatwick Airport, covers 540 acres with around 9 million square feet of space and more than 600 businesses, including warehouses and industrial units. If the mains power fails, staff need clear lighting along aisles and escape routes to reach the exits safely. We plan where the fittings and exit signs go along each route out of the building.

Shops, offices and flats across Crawley

In the town centre around County Mall, shops and offices need lit exits and stairways for staff and customers. In the neighbourhoods, from Three Bridges to Broadfield, the shared hallways and stairs of blocks of flats often need emergency lighting too. We can look at what you have and replace failed fittings.

Our emergency lighting services

Survey and design

We look at your escape routes, exits, stairs and any areas without daylight, and design emergency lighting that suits the building.

Installation

We install emergency lighting and exit signs, either as new or as an upgrade to an older system.

Maintenance

Ask us about maintenance for your emergency lighting. We also offer 24/7 support for customers on a maintenance contract.

Planned with your fire alarm

If you also need a fire alarm in Crawley, we can plan both together so one team looks after your fire safety systems.

Your responsibilities

If you own, manage or run non-domestic premises in Crawley, including the common parts of blocks of flats, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 puts duties on the “responsible person”. Where it’s needed, escape routes and exits that need lighting must have emergency lighting that works if the normal lighting fails. It does not apply to single private homes. The Order also expects safety equipment, including emergency lighting, to be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance, and government guidance says a record of testing and maintenance should be kept. For most premises in Crawley, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service enforces these rules and may visit to check your arrangements.

Emergency lighting questions

Do you cover all of Crawley?
Yes, every neighbourhood, Manor Royal and the town centre, as well as the rest of Surrey, Sussex, Kent, London and Essex.

Does my building need emergency lighting?
It depends on the building, how it’s used and your fire risk assessment. We’ll look at your escape routes and explain what’s needed.

Can you look at lighting someone else installed?
Yes. We can look at an existing system and tell you if any fittings need replacing.

Can you do emergency lighting and fire alarms together?
Yes. We can plan and install both, so you deal with one company.

When can I call you?
Our office is open Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 17:00. We also offer 24/7 support for customers on a maintenance contract.
