Fire Alarms in Dorking

Dorking’s buildings range from listed shops on the High Street to modern units on Station Road. If you run, let or manage one of them, your fire alarm should be designed around that building, not taken off the shelf.

Applewood Fire & Security designs, installs, commissions and services fire alarm systems for businesses, landlords and homeowners in Dorking and the surrounding Mole Valley villages. We’ll visit, look at how your building is laid out and used, and recommend a system that fits it, with nothing you don’t need.

Call 020 3696 9489 (Mon to Fri, 08:30 to 17:00) or send us a message to talk about your building, old or new.

Older buildings, done carefully

Much of Dorking’s centre is old. The street plan around Pump Corner, where the High Street, West Street and South Street meet, dates back to medieval times. Many of the buildings along those streets are listed, along with landmarks such as Pippbrook House.

Fitting fire detection into an older building takes care. We plan where detectors, call points and sounders go, and how the cables run, so the system works properly and is as unobtrusive as practical. Wireless devices can help where running cables would be difficult. If your building is listed, works inside or out may need listed building consent, so check with Mole Valley District Council’s planning team before anything is fitted.

What we do

Survey and design

We start by looking at the building: its size, construction, how people use it and who might be inside at any time. From that we design a system that suits the premises and the findings of your fire risk assessment.

Installation and handover

For most commercial work we fit Hochiki fire detection. If you already have a system, we can extend or upgrade it rather than start again.

Once installed, we test the whole system and hand it over. We show you how the panel works, what the indicators mean, and what to do if the alarm sounds.

Servicing and maintenance

Regular servicing helps keep your system working properly and gives you the records to show it. We can take on servicing for a system someone else installed, as well as our own. Customers on a maintenance contract also get access to our 24/7 call-out.

Fire safety law and your premises

If you’re responsible for a business or other non-domestic premises in Dorking, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 applies to you. This covers most buildings other than private homes, including the shared parts of blocks of flats. The “responsible person” may be the employer, owner, landlord, occupier or someone who manages the building. They must have a fire risk assessment and put in place the fire safety measures it identifies, and keep those measures maintained.

In Dorking, as across the county, the law is enforced by Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. Its inspectors can visit premises to check compliance. A well-designed fire alarm that’s serviced and documented helps you show you’re taking your responsibilities seriously.

We don’t carry out fire risk assessments. If your assessment calls for a new or improved fire alarm, we can design and install it.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you fit a fire alarm in a listed or older building?
Yes. We plan the layout and cable routes with the building’s character in mind, and can use wireless devices where they suit. If it’s listed, check first with your local planning authority (Mole Valley District Council for Dorking) whether you need listed building consent.

Do you cover the villages around Dorking?
Yes. As well as the town, we work across Mole Valley and the rest of Surrey, and in Sussex, Kent, London and Essex.

When can I reach you?
Ring the office Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 17:00. If you’re on a maintenance contract, you also get our 24/7 call-out.
