Over the past year, we have seen an explosion of cyber-attacks taking place on companies all around the world. Ransomware has taken over the web and IT security is more important than ever before. In the last few days a new ransomware virus has emerged known as ‘Bad Rabbit’, “The attack differs from other recent viruses in that the exploit is user based, not computer”.
This new form of ransomware will ask a user to download an Adobe Flash update when visiting an infected website rather than attacking a weakness in the computer’s security. Once the user has made the fatal error of hitting the download button the virus will establish itself into the network and will then attempt to ‘hack’ other computers in the network.
“The malware has affected systems at three Russian websites, an airport in Ukraine and an underground railway in the capital city, Kiev. The cyber-police chief in Ukraine confirmed to the Reuters news agency that Bad Rabbit was the ransomware in question.”
This attack is very similar to the WannaCry and Petya attacks that also took place this year but it has not yet been confirmed if the virus will continue to spread.
“Bad Rabbit encrypts the contents of a computer and asks for a payment in bitcoins, or about $280 (£213)”.
So the next time you are asked to download something when on the web make sure you check the source! Having up to date security software is now crucial, especially in a business setting. If you want any advice on security software or an FREE audit contact my team on 020 3141 8833.
